I count my blessings that it was only the seedlings that got damaged in the huge amount of heavy rain we had. It could be worse, we are both here. The seedlings I lost were my spinach and lettuce seedlings and also some viola seedlings. I was watching out the kitchen window watching the tub with viola seedlings in it  quickly filling with a large amount of water.

Everything else seem to be ok, if anything the cauliflowers and silverbeet love it!  Same goes for the glorious weeds that don't have weedmat on yet. The water saving crystals all rose to the top and look funny, like snow. It's funny how much it expands. Will dig it back in when it's dryish outside.

I'm going to be going to the Nundah State School May Fair on Saturday and hanging out to see what they have on the plant stall, wonder if I can pick up something nifty and different.

Beetroot seedlings are coming up nicely, need to get a fresh batch in and make another order at cornucopia seeds. Think I may try something different this time.

These are from ABC Gardening Australia June 2009 issue and summed up by me.
Page 45.

No-fuss bird bath:
Use a old plastic plant saucer (or whatever material suits you i.e clay saucer.)

Seedling support:
Cut up toilet tubes or paper towel tubes into little collars and plant the lettuce through them. These keep the outer leaves off the ground and avoid rotting.

By Millie Ross.

1. Unplug the toaster and cut the power cord with bolt cutters (I got someone I know who's partner is an electrician to do this for me). Seal the outside  with a clear rust-proof  primer before putting in the potting mix if it is going to sit outdoors. Let it dry. Fill the toaster half way with potting mix and tap to settle it.

2. The plants can get stressed in tight spaces. Used healed succulents such as Echeveria secunda. These just slip right in and are quick to develop their roots. If using a brought plant use the smallest one you can find and soak in a liquid seaweed before teasing the roots out and lowering it in.

3. Backfill the toaster with potting mix, tapping to fill in the cavities. Mulch with gravel. Check soil moistures regularly as it quickly dries out. Soak the whole toaster in liquid seaweed and weak fish emulsion for 15 minutes after watering, once a month.

Brought some more seedlings today just baby spinach and some marigolds.

Planted some of the marigold seedlings, still 3 left in the punnet to do. Those will go into another container so will do them later. Want to wait until the baby spinach gets a wee bit bigger before transplanting. There are 3 in the pot.

One of the seeds has sprouted unsure which. Planted some silverbeet seeds today, and will do throw some more rocket down.

The cauliflower seedlings seem to be doing ok *fingers crossed I haven't jinxed myself then*.

Lots and lots of viola flowers are appearing now. Today I purchased another punnet, this time they have blue flowers so planted those out along with a punnet of Afro parsley, the parsley went in with the cauliflower seedlings. Coles had big buckets (35l) on special today for $5 (a bit bigger than the pots I would of gotten today), so grabbed a couple of those. T is using one for his transformers, so will pick up another couple tomorrow. Put in some drainage holes in the bottom and away we go.

Punnet of Dianthus for the garden today, these will go in containers out the back.
More bulbs are starting to make their entrance now.
Re-potted the Matthew Flinders little bird feeder the other day, we lost one for some reason.
Friday another container will be purchased and a bigger bag of potting mix to.
More weed mat will go down tonight.

Matthew Flinders little bird feeder from k-mart this morning along with a mouse wire ornament that T chose.

The other day, I had 5 gardeners around to tidy up my yard and get rid of the weeds and tree's, now I have a fresh slate to work with. Weedmat has started going down, i'm doing it in sections to make it easier to lay. I want to get pebbles to put along the edges or bricks to hold it down, at the moment my pots are holding what is laid down. Will add pics this weekend. I want to add walking stones and a bird bath. Where the small square of concrete is i'll add a hanging plant tree if i can find them again.

Today, I purchased a Matthew Flinders little bird feeder from k-mart, it is a dwarf to 1 metre high, and is a hybrid of 2 popular Callistemons which are Little John and Captain Cook.

More bulbs went in the pots today. 5 kinds - Babiana (10 mixed), Texas Gold Dutch Iris (4), freesias, ranunculi and anemones.

22 March 2009 @ 09:24 pm

10 mixed sparaxis
10 blue/white freesias
2 ornithogalum black pearl lily.
Another punnet of violas - boutique lavender.

Repotted houseplants - 1 left to do.

21 March 2009 @ 05:21 pm

Planted some seedlings in between the bulbs to add a bit more colour as recommended on some gardening sites and mag's. The bulbs seem to be taking root now and looks like one is even sprouting..

I planted 2 punnets of viola's - boutique lavender (a beautiful purple colour) and space crystals (mixed colours).

Brought some seeds aswell - broccoli, cabbage and silverbeet.
Will prep the soil in the containers for these in the next couple of weeks. The broccoli and cabbage shall be interesting.

If space is a problem try planting into containers. Use Dutch iris down the bottom, and plant them so close that each bulb almost touches. Then cover with soil, or potting mix. On top grow Babiana. The iris will flower first, then the Babianas and so you get a longer flowering time.
